Privacy policy

The short version

  • Bimb records on your computer and keeps the recordings on your computer. We never receive your videos, audio, clicks or screen.
  • Using Bimb needs no account. You only sign in to buy or manage a license.
  • There is no analytics and no tracking. The website sets no cookies unless you sign in, and then only one, to keep you signed in.
  • The only personal data we receive is what you type into the contact form (or, earlier, the waitlist form), and, if you buy a license, the license key checks and order details described below.
  • We do not sell your data or share it for advertising.

The Bimb extension

What it records

Only what you choose to record: a browser tab, or a screen or window you pick. If you turn them on, it also records your microphone and sound from the shared tab or screen. While you record a tab, Bimb notes where you click and move the pointer so it can zoom in on the right place, and which keyboard shortcuts you press (only combinations with a modifier key, plus Esc, Enter and Tab, for the optional shortcut overlay). It does not record plain typing, and it records nothing at all from password fields. It does not read the text or contents of the pages you visit apart from what appears in the video.

Where it goes

Everything stays in your browser’s storage on your device until you delete it. Recording, editing and export all happen locally. A file you export is saved where you choose. We have no servers that receive recordings, and apart from the license check described below the extension sends no usage data, crash reports or identifiers to us.

Network requests

The editor asks GitHub, at most once a day, whether a newer version of Bimb has been released. It is an ordinary request to GitHub’s public API. GitHub can see your IP address and browser details, as with any web request; the request contains nothing from your recordings and no identifier from us. Nothing is downloaded or installed automatically. The only other requests are to api.bimb.dev, for licensing, described under “License checks” below.

Why each permission is needed

  • tabCapture and offscreen: record the tab you ask it to record, in a background page.
  • activeTab and scripting: start on the tab you click on, and run the small script that notes clicks in that tab.
  • storage and unlimitedStorage: keep your recordings and settings on your device.
  • Access to all sites (optional): only if you allow it, so clicks inside embedded frames from other sites can be tracked too. You can leave it off and everything else works.

Bimb does not use any data it handles for anything other than making your recording, does not transfer it to anyone, and does not use it for advertising or to judge creditworthiness.

This website

The site itself sets no cookies, runs no analytics and loads no third-party scripts, fonts or trackers (signing in, described below, sets one cookie). It is hosted on Cloudflare, which, like any host, processes technical request data (such as your IP address) to deliver the pages and keep the service secure.

The contact form

If you send a message through the contact form, we receive the message and, if you give it, your email address. They are emailed to us so we can read and answer them; we do not store them in a database. Your email address is only used to reply to you. As with the waitlist below, the service counts requests per IP address for a short time to stop abuse, without keeping the address.

The waitlist form (closed)

The waitlist is closed. If you joined it, we collected:

  • your email address;
  • your answer to “What do you record most?”;
  • anything you choose to write in the optional feature-request box.

We use it to email you when Bimb is ready and to decide what to build. It is stored in a Cloudflare database that we control. To limit repeated sign-ups from one place, the sign-up service checks your IP address against a short-lived counter; we do not store the IP address with your sign-up. Cloudflare’s logs for the sign-up service record that a request happened (time, result) and can include technical details such as an IP address; we use them to fix problems and stop abuse.

We keep waitlist entries until we have finished contacting the list about launch, or until you ask us to delete yours.

Accounts (buying a license)

Recording, editing and exporting with Bimb never require an account, and the extension does not ask you to sign in. An account exists only so you can buy a license and manage it. The waitlist is not an account.

When you sign in, sign-in is handled by our provider WorkOS (AuthKit), which processes your email address and credentials on our behalf. We keep your WorkOS user ID, your email address, your name if you give one, and a session record that keeps you signed in for up to 14 days. Signing in sets one cookie, on api.bimb.dev, that is used only to keep you signed in; it is not used for analytics or advertising. Signing out deletes the session. To close your account and delete this data, email hello@bimb.dev.

License checks

When you paste a license key into Bimb, the extension sends the key and a device name (for example “Chrome on Linux”) to api.bimb.dev. Our server passes the key to Polar to check it and returns a signed token, which is stored on your device. About once a month, while you are online, the extension repeats the check so that a refunded license can be switched off; if it cannot reach the server, nothing changes. Deactivating a device sends the key and that device’s license activation ID. Separately, opening the Unlock dialog asks api.bimb.dev for the current price and how many early licenses are left; that request carries no identifier, but our server, like any web server, sees your IP address. None of this includes anything from your recordings. We do not store your license key. We do store your order number, customer ID, email address and the product you bought, taken from Polar’s order notification, to honour refunds and count early licenses.

Payments

Payment is handled by Polar (polar.sh), which acts as the seller (merchant of record) and collects your payment details itself; we never see your card number. Polar generates your license key, shows it on your receipt and in its customer portal, and keeps a record of which devices it is active on. Polar’s own privacy policy applies to what it collects.

Your choices

You can ask to see, correct or delete the data we hold about you (for example, your waitlist entry) at any time, and you can withdraw from the waitlist. Email hello@bimb.dev from the address you signed up with. To remove recordings, delete them in Bimb or clear the extension’s data in your browser; they never left your device.

Children

Bimb and this website are not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top and, for anything that affects data we hold about you, tell the people on the list.
